Dr. David Lacey Memorial Scholarship

Team Broken Earth lost a valued team member and dear friend this past year, Dr. David Lacey. Dr. Lacey volunteered his medical expertise in Haiti and is described as a “man who loved life and giving back”. The Dr. David Lacey Memorial Scholarship has been established by his family to provide annual funding for a Memorial University Medical student to join a support mission in Haiti. The chosen student will have demonstrated excellence in patient-centred and compassionate care.

Dr. Lacey graduated from MUN Medicine in 1988. He grew up in downtown St. John’s from humble beginnings and became a physician through his unparalleled work ethic and determination. As an Anesthesiologist, Dr. Lacey spent most of his professional tenure at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and Women’s Health at the H.S.C., as well as several years as the Clinical Chief of Anesthesia and Perioperative Program. He was deeply passionate about his job, patients, students, and highly valued work family. Dr. Lacey was well known for his ability to light up a room, bringing levity and joy to the work environment. In the spirit of humanitarianism, Dr. Lacey volunteered with Team Broken Earth in Haiti, as well as several Operation Smile missions in China, the Philippines and South America.

Dr. Lacey is greatly missed by all those who knew him and Team Broken Earth is honoured to carry on his legacy.
